HOW TO OBTAIN A CERTIFICATE OF NO IMPEDIMENT TO MARRIAGE IN KENYA

A Certificate of no impediment to marriage is a certificate issued by the Office of the Registrar of Marriages confirming that a Kenyan national has no existing marriage record hence competent to get married outside the country. An application for this certificate has to undergo a mandatory 10 days display at the nearest Registrar’s office dependent on the Applicants last place of residence.

Below are the requirements an applicant must have when applying for this certificate:

1. An online application form (this form is filled online on Ecitizen and downloadable at the end of the application);
2. Applicant’s passport bio data page;
3. Applicant’s recent color passport size photograph;
4. Applicant’s Birth Certificate;
5. Fiancée’s passport bio data page;
6. Death Certificate (if widow or widower);
7. Divorce Decree Absolute (If the Applicant had been married before and divorced);
8. Sworn affidavit if the Death Certificate or Divorce Decree in (vi) & (vii) above is more than two (2) years; and
9. Parent’s details (Full name).

For Kenyans residing abroad, you are required to upload certified copies of the above documents. Certification can be done by Kenyan Missions and Embassies or a Notary Public abroad.

For Kenyans in Kenya whose Fiancée is abroad you will be required to upload a certified copy of your Fiancée’s passport bio data page.

Applicants residing in Kenya are required to submit originals of their passport, birth certificate and original certified copy of your Fiancée’s passport (original Fiancée’s passport if the Fiancée is in Kenya).

The certificate of no impediment to marriage is valid for 6 months from the date of issue and upon approval, the Applicant is notified to pay an issuance fee of Kshs. 10,050/= on the eCitizen platform.
