OVERVIEW OF DEPENDANT PASS REQUIREMENTS IN KENYA
(Immigration Kenya: series 5)
A dependant pass is a document issued to a person (foreigner) whose spouse, parent or guardian is lawfully entitled to enter Kenya by virtue of:
- being a citizen of Kenya;
- having been issued with a work permit;
- being an exempted person; or
- being a permanent resident.
And it entitles the dependant in respect of whom it is issued to enter Kenya within the period specified in the pass and to remain in Kenya during its validity period.
Who Qualifies?
A dependant pass is usually issued to persons who are Dependants of:
- Kenya citizens
- Work Permit holders
- Exempted persons
- Permanent resident persons.
Requirements for a Depenadant pass
The applicant must submit the follow:
- A duly filled, signed dependant pass application Form 28.
- Detailed and Signed Cover letter from the applicant addressed to the Director of Immigration Services.
- Recent colored passport size photographs of the dependant.
- Copy of a valid national passport / National ID (bio-data page) for both the applicant and the Dependant.
- Evidence of the relationship between the applicant and the dependant i.e. duly certified copies of marriage certificate or birth certificate whichever applicable.
- Proof of sufficient and assured income to sustain self and the dependant.
- Documentary Proof of any other condition leading to dependency e.g. Medical condition, disability, age among others.
- A valid copy of permit for those applicants holding a work permit (at least six months prior to date of application).
Applicable fees
The Kenyan government does not charge any amount as processing fees but it charges issuance fees (Payable upon approval) as follow:
- Dependant Pass for spouse and children of a Kenyan Citizen: Kshs20,000
- Dependant Pass for Work Permit and Permanent Residents holders: Kshs10,000
Other Conditions
- Failure to make payment within 30 days from the date of approval will render the application null and void.
- Documents in foreign languages should be translated into English by either the Embassy, Public Notary, or authorized /recognized institution.
- Dependant pass does not entitle the holder to receive education or training in any establishment within Kenya, without a valid student pass.
- All citizens of the East Africa Community (Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi) are exempted from payment of the Dependant pass fee.
- Dependant pass is not issued to persons who are already engaged in any form of employment either for gain or not.
- Dependant pass is not for the purposes of facilitating/evasion from paying visa fees.
- An immigration officer cannot issue a dependant pass unless he or she is satisfied that: the person, on whose behalf the application is made, depends on the person making the application for his or her maintenance, the dependant is a spouse or a child of the applicant or is by reason of age, disability or any incapacity unable to maintain himself adequately or for some other reason relies upon the applicant for his or her maintenance; and the applicant has an income sufficient to enable him or her to maintain and continue to maintain the dependant for the duration of the dependant’s stay in the country.
