KENYA INTRODUCES NEW CLASSES OF WORK PERMITS
The government of Kenya through the Prime Cabinet Secretary & acting Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration has introduced new classes of work permits for staffs of the United Nations, & Diplomatic missions, professionals working for religious or charitable organizations and Citizens of EAST Africa Community.
In a special issue Kenya gazette supplement number 225 published on 16th December 2024 as legal notice number 198. The government introduces the below classes of work permits with their respective issuance fees:
NO. | NEW WORK PERMIT CLASS | PERSONS APPLICABLE TO | CHARGE/FEE |
1. | Class I: Approved Religious Activities | A person who is a member of an institution registered under the Society’s Act and is engaged as a missionary and whose activities are directly involved in preaching or conduct of religious worship and rituals and whose presence in Kenya is of benefit to Kenya. | Processing fee: Gratis/no charge Issuance fee: Ksh. 20,000/= per year |
2. | Class N: Digital Nomad | A foreigner who is in Kenya and is working remotely for companies based outside Kenya | Processing fee: USD 200 Issuance fee: USD 1000 per year |
3. | Class P: Staff of the United Nations, Diplomatic Missions, Inter-governmental Organizations and International Non-governmental organizations accredited Neighboring Hardship countries | A person based in a neighbouring hardship country who is a staff of the United Nation, Diplomatic Mission, an inter-governmental Organization and international non-governmental organization accredited to the said neighbouring hardship country and whose presence in Kenya will be of benefit to Kenya to enable that person and or his dependants to reside in Kenya. | Processing fee: USD 200 Issuance fee: USD 1000 per year |
3. | Class Q: Professional working for Religious or Charitable Organizations | A person who is a member of a prescribed profession and working for a religious organization or charitable organization and who is NOT involved in preaching or the conduct of religious worship and rituals and whose presence in Kenya will be of benefit to Kenya. | Processing fee: Ksh. 20,000/= Issuance fee: Ksh. 100,000/= per year |
4. | Class R: Citizens of East African Community | A person who is a citizen of a member State of the East African Community and is not a prohibited immigrant and who intends to reside, engage in employment, business activity, trade, or engage in any prescribed profession(as outlined in schedule 8 Kenya Citizenship Regulation 2012) and whose presence in Kenya will be of benefit to Kenya. | Processing fee: Gratis/no charge Issuance fee: Gratis/no charge |
The government has reclassified class I work permit which previously was applicable to both Approved religious or charitable activities and made it applicable to only approved religious activities and to persons who engage in missionary and activities that directly involves preaching or conduct of religious worship and rituals.
